I've said this in the past and I've been pondered about it a lot. Digital games are a different beast altogether compared to physical games. This also goes for any form of media like movies, music, ebooks, art, etc. Physical media is right there for you to access anytime you want without restrictions and issues. Digital stuff on the other hand have so many complicated issues, DRMs, restrictions, and other problems that might arise if those digital games or other forms of media are connected to another server, company and corporation. The gaming companies wanna put all these restrictions because they wanna control the IP aka intellectual property. I understand that the life cycle of some consoles and handhelds only last for a couple of years or more before the release of the next big thing, console and handheld. That's why game companies stop supporting those older consoles because people use it less. Unless they're hardcore collectors, enthusiast and people who buy everything then the average consumer will move on to the next gen aka next generation of gaming systems. It's understandable that companies and corporations hold the copyright to those products digital or physical so that others don't make money from them without permission. The problem with Nintendo right now with their eShop is that any and all games that are in those servers will be permanently inaccessible once they close it similar to what happened to the Wii store. You can't buy those games anymore unless you already own and have them downloaded to your consoles like the Wiis, 3DS and Wii Us. I wouldn't have a problem about this if Nintendo made all the digital games from their previous gen consoles available to buy and download to their newer gens and future gens like their current Nintendo Switch systems. Since Nintendo doesn't really care about that this is the problem that we have right now. I love Nintendo and have always been a fan of their games since the beginning back in the early 90s when I first played Super Mario Bros. on my uncle's Famicom. That was so long ago but I still remember that to this day. Good times. Sigh. If Nintendo doesn't care about game preservation and keeping those older IPs alive then who will. The fans are the only ones we have left when it comes to preservation. Once those games are gone they are gone for good digitally! Unless you're own of those collectors who go online buying games from Ebay, Amazon and other real brick and mortar stores that sells vintage and old school retro games and systems then you won't be able to buy these games on the eShop once they're close. You're gonna have to wait for Nintendo and those companies who own those games to put it in their Nintendo Switch eShop. I don't know why Nintendo just doesn't connect all their consoles and eShops into one place so that you can use any system Wii, Wii U, 3DS and Nintendo Switch to download those games. There should be a variety of choices to make it a better experience for the players. Sadly that's not what's happening. Playstation learned from their mistakes because fans got mad when they heard that Sony was planning to close the PS3 and PSP online stores. The backlash made Sony change their minds and keep those stores up. See? You do have a voice and you have the power to make it heard. Stop caring about what others think and just do what needs to be done! You know that what Nintendo is doing isn't right so let your voice be heard online and let them know that you don't like how they're going about this! I also have issues with Nintendo when it comes to how they handle fanmade games with their whole cease and desist. They always threaten, attack and sue fans who makes these fanmade games. I can understand that there needs to be a warning if those fans are making tons of money from Nintendo's consoles and IPs without their permission or partnership. If the fan on the other hand isn't making a cent or dime from said games then Nintendo shouldn't get all judge, jury and executioner on everyone like that laying down harsh punishment like that. I see lots of fan art, digital art and other content being made about Nintendo's IPs but I don't see Nintendo going after those guys! See what I mean! Some of those artist are even paid commisions online to those artwork yet I don't see Nintendo having an issue with that. It's only the fanmade games that they get crazy with the legalities on those things. I don't know. What about you guys? What do you think? Check out below for some videos about this news.
